Troy Cartwright - Bygones

Troy Cartwright is back at it with his latest album, Bygones, which dropped on August 30, 2024. Here at RootsnRevelry, we’ve been keeping a close eye on Cartwright, thanks to his knack for crafting a distinctive, niche sound that’s all his own. He’s cemented his reputation as one of modern country’s most prolific songwriters, boasting an impressive roster of credits and co-writes.

Cartwright has a gift for spinning a solid country narrative, staying true to the genre’s roots while skillfully weaving in pop and electronica elements. Now, let’s be clear—he’s not out delivering perspective changing lyrics, challenging the narrative or deliver earth-shattering revelations. His themes stick to the well-trodden paths of country music: heartbreak, whiskey, nostalgia, and love gone wrong. And you know what? That’s perfectly fine. What Cartwright truly excels at is crafting damn fine, feel-good, well-written country songs. His songs are rythmic, catchy, and they make you want move.

It’s refreshing to not be sad all the time……

Highlights

The album opens with the title track, Bygones, an undeniably fitting choice. It’s my favorite song on the album, which is likely no coincidence given it’s also the most traditionally country-sounding track. The melody is irresistibly catchy, with a kick drum that immediately sets my foot tapping. The harmonious background “woos” and the delicately muted finger-picked guitar add a comforting warmth, perfectly complementing the overall nostalgic vibe of the tune. Lyrically, it hits all the right notes, stirring up memories of high school sweethearts, first kisses, and missed connections. It’s as if Troy has penned himself a Hallmark Channel movie—we’re only missing the coffee shop at Christmas.

Then there’s Same, a track that’s practically begging for Top 40 radio play. This is the kind of song that showcases why Troy Cartwright is a top-tier songwriter. He knows exactly what he’s doing, pressing all the right buttons in the craft of songwriting. We’re treated to an infectious electric guitar melody, a subtle background banjo, and then dropped into a lyrical rollercoaster, with Cartwright admitting he’s the same guy with the same vices, long after his heart was shattered. Same is one of the first singles off of Bygones, accompained by a great music video.

More Standout Tracks

Troy Cartwright is something of a musical superhero, possessing an unmatched ability to flood your mind with dopamine-laced nostalgia. The next two tracks serve as yet another testament to Cartwright’s expertise in crafting evocative, feel-good music.

Wild One is a bittersweet reflection on the futile attempt to tame the heart of a free spirit. It’s an anthem of a hot and heavy summer fling, capturing the essence of being left behind by the one who got away, kicking up dust as she disappears into the horizon.

I previously covered the release of Lincoln Continental, but it deserves another mention here. This track is a masterful blend of nostalgia and heartfelt storytelling. Cartwright vividly narrates the romance of his grandparents, personified by their old Lincoln Continental, while subtly reflecting his own longing for love. The song’s simple instrumentals—a steady guitar and playful piano melodies—create an uplifting, feel-good vibe. Just before the chorus, the tempo picks up, mirroring Cartwright’s lyrics, making it an irresistible summer anthem. Lincoln Continental is the perfect soundtrack for a long drive down the highway, with the windows down, the radio turned up, the sun setting, and your mind drifting back to cherished memories, perhaps getting a bit sentimental in the process.

Final Thoughts

Bygones is something of a melting pot of Troy Cartwright’s singles from the past few years, which makes perfect sense, as each song stands strongly on its own. Cartwright has already established himself as one of the genre’s finest songwriters, but he’s more than just a penman—he’s a musical alchemist. He has an uncanny ability to craft sonically pleasing landscapes, blending traditional country roots with modern production that leaves the listener in a genuinely good headspace. His music makes you feel good, makes you want to move and dance. Bygones is the perfect reminiscing, highway cruisin’, sing along soundtrack of the summer.

I’ve said it before in past articles, but Bygones is yet another testament to how underrated Cartwright is as an artist. This album serves as a stellar showcase of his ability to write, arrange, and produce country songs. This man deserves Top 40 glory, and I suspect the time is near.
