Aisha Badru - The Sun Still Rises

The Sun Also Rises is Aisha Badru’s second full-length album, following 2018’s Pendulum and four (!) EPs released since then. As a singer-songwriter from New York City, Badru brings her distinctive voice to the forefront of this record. I haven’t listened to any of her previous releases, but on first listen, her voice immediately stands out. It’s beautiful, and her lyrics are clear and easy to understand. While Badru’s voice is uniquely hers, it reminded me—pleasantly—of the Be Good Tanyas or Frazey Ford.

In short, this is a remarkably easy album to listen to, both for its sound and emotional tone. The song structures, chord progressions, arrangements, and production are all top-notch, creating a polished and enjoyable experience from start to finish. The Sun Also Rises has a smooth, lush sound, and although acoustic guitars are present throughout the record, it feels more like pop with a folk sensibility rather than the other way around. The result is an album that feels fresh while staying grounded in timeless musicality.

Lyrics

I’d much rather listen to an artist sing about something they truly believe—something Badru excels at—than endure yet another generic love song, even if the lyrics don’t speak directly to me. I’m about to turn 60, and it’s clear that these lyrics weren’t written for someone like me. Despite that, I couldn’t help but reflect on musical memories from my younger years.

(Enter a gritty cinematic flashback of the 1980s underground punk movement)

In 1983, after graduating from high school, I got into hardcore punk. The bands in that scene had a notorious reputation for debauchery and cynicism, which I embraced to an embarrassing degree. Yet, there was a movement within that scene promoting positivity and unity. One key band in that movement was 7 Seconds (more around ’85), and I remember reacting negatively to their optimistic lyrics. Even back then, I was suspicious of strangers singing about unity and positivity. Of course, I guess that says more about me than it does about Aisha Badru—or Kevin Seconds.

Badru’s lyrics are relentlessly positive, encouraging listeners to live in the present, express gratitude, and embrace similar themes. I commend her for tackling serious and timely topics with such optimism. This world could sure as hell use a little more positivity……

Standout Tracks

The Sun Still Rises kicks off with A Little Mad, which features piano and Badru’s spoken/sung vocals. This was released earlier this year as a single and has gotten some positive feedback. While A Little Mad, is a catchy song, I still prefer Badru’s “full on” singing. This one offers Badru’s take on the realities on the grind that is modern life.

Badru uses a combination of spoken vocal delivery mixed with “full on” singing throughout most of the album. Life to Live, is a good example of this. The chorus, which features a prominent drum machine, is irresistible. While “It’s your life to live” is a bit cliche, it’s hard to be too concerned when you’re humming along to such an infectious chorus.

Side of the Moon is a great example, mirroring why this record sounds so good. Vocals, lyrics, arrangements, and production all fit together like a seemless poetic puzzle.

Final Thoughts

The Sun Still Rises is a beautifully crafted album that showcases Aisha Bardu’s unique voice, thoughtful lyrics, and polished production. Its blend of pop sensibilities with folk undertones creates an inviting, uplifting listening experience that feels both modern and timeless. For those seeking music with heart, positivity, and substance, this album is well worth the listen.
