Prinz Grizzley - Dear Leftovers

Austrian Americana singer-songwriter Prinz Grizzley is set to release his latest album, Dear Leftovers, on May 31, 2024. This honky-tonk hybrid of influences is Grizzley’s seventh full-length album, following his first four with former band The Golden Reef.

Grizzley has a unique voice that resonates with the right amount of grit and pain. A cross somewhere between Jeff Bridges and Joe Pug, it has a wisdom that can be felt. This is a fella who has seen some hard times and has a story to tell. His songwriting shines through as poetic pieces that explore heartbreak, love gone wrong, and… well… figuring your shit out—all essential elements for a standout country album.

Highlights

The album opens with the strong, unexpected flair of Corrina. This track tells the story of our protagonist, who, despite being heartbroken, vows to always be there for Corrina as she searches for something more out of life. Grizzley skillfully navigates multiple influences within the genre, delivering a ballad with a fast-paced Mariachi-like melody and arrangement. The instrumentals will have you dancing with your partner, while the lyrics have you drowning your sorrows.

Take My Pride is another quintessential country and western song. With its slow, galloping drumbeat and iconic pedal steel, Grizzley channels heartworn troubadours from a bygone era. Reminiscent of an early Hank Williams tune, Take My Pride is Grizzley’s adaptation of the classic “woman done me wrong” song, masterfully accented by the sad choir harmonies in the hook.

Got Nothing to Prove picks up the pace with a rockin’ honky-tonk piano in the backdrop. Basically a blue-collar warning, Grizzley details the acceptance of his rowdy ways as he sells his soul for a paycheck. The message is clear: “I got nothing to prove.” It’s a work-hard, party-harder anthem. For whatever reason, this song brought upon intrussive thoughts of the perfect bar fight. I was left overcome with the urge to sling a patron through a plate glass window and waterboard him in a horse trough.

More Standout Tracks

Wicked Heart captivates with its infectious pedal steel melody, flawlessly blending genres in a manner reminiscent of 80s pop ballads. This track exudes a bright, fresh feel while showcasing Grizzley’s talent for crafting melancholic anthems. The song is sonically uplifting despite its heavy subject matter, making it a ironically beautiful choice for those navigating the end of a controlling relationship.

Dear Leftovers exceeds at transporting listeners back to the era of early country music ballads. Trucker Love demonstrates this once again, composed of brilliantly nuanced lyrics and a nostalgic Johnny Cash like tempo. One of the standout tracks on the album, Trucker Love is written from the perspective of a flawed man. Its urgent, driving tempo complements Grizzley’s raw depiction of his love for the trucker life, embracing its rush and grittiness.

Where Did We Go Wrong offers a vulnerable glimpse into a couple drifting apart. The lyrics reflect on their past successes and hold on to a faint hope for change, even as they struggle to look each other in the eye. This song is instrumentally stripped down compared to the rest of the album, creating a profound impact on both the psyche and the soul. The track is a painfully relatable cry for help, as a relationship slowly meets its end.

Final Thoughts

From Austria to America: Prinz Grizzley is redefining Americana music.

Throughout this 11-track ode to Americana music, I only began to scratch the surface. I could have easily thrown a dart and chosen any number of songs to highlight. He Ain’t Me or Much Too Sober are also surperbly written personal favorites. The point being, every track on this album is journey through honky-tonk history, weaving in and out of genres and showcasing modern country music laced with old. Grizzley’s vocal is mysterious and authentic, perfectly complementing his pen.

Dear Leftovers is entirely written, produced, and arranged by C.H. Comper, also known as Prinz Grizzley. With the help of his backing band The Beargaroos, the proof is in the pudding: instrumentally, lyrically, and vocally, this project is a testament to what Americana and country music should be. Previously, I had not heard of Prinz Grizzley, but now…  Dear Leftovers is destined to live on repeat.
