Josh Sinclair - White Trash Recipes

Joshua Sinclair emerges from the sticks with his latest album, White Trash Recipes. This 10-track salute to country music perfectly blends modern country tones with a nostalgic ’90s twist, featuring everything from country rock to grunge-esque buzz ballads like Hey. Sinclair has firmly planted his feet on the ground, showcasing himself as a master at crafting some incredibly catchy country music. Released strategically on May 1st, the album is packed with a mixture of sing-along summer anthems.

Highlights, Songs and Lyrics

The album kicks off with a ’90s-inspired country rock anthem, Sugar in the Tailpipe. Featuring a hard-driving electric guitar rhythm, the tune perfectly captures the spirit of a rowdy honky tonk bar. Sinclair sings a warning about a wild-hearted, crazy vixen who is “nutty as a fruitcake.”

Following suit is Summer in a Small Town, a track that cranks up the modern country flair. But we’re talking about the good type of country flair, the kind with Daisy Dukes—the kind that “don’t stay on.” This song is the first of many beer-drinking, sing-along songs. Impressively arranged with wailing harmonica in the backdrop, slide guitar, and blaring honky-tonk piano over the chorus, Summer in a Small Town is literally Top 40 ready.

Diamonds in the Dirt offers a contrast to the previous tracks. Sinclair slows things down a bit and enters the realm of singer-songwriter territory with a heartbreaking “love gone wrong” song. This acoustic “self-medicating” ballad is the perfect “tear in your beer” jukebox song for anyone down on their luck.

More Standout Tracks

Making Up is Fun emerges as a standout track, objectively one of the strongest on the album. Its lively melody and irresistibly catchy chorus make it hard not to sing along, especially with the nice bass walk-down into the hook, “Cause making up is fun.” It’s perfect for those of us deviants addicted to toxic relationships and wild makeup sex.

The track Hey transports listeners back to the ’90s and those catchy buzz ballad commercials, channeling the vibe of bands like Eve 6 or Blink 182. Hey got me waking up in the morning, watching MTV while waiting for the school bus.

Turn You On once again returns to the ’90s country radio atmosphere with its honky tonk rhythm and hard-driving, clapping beat. Sinclair’s vocals channel a young Steve Earle, embodying the essence of a carefree, rebellious rocker pulling all the stops to Turn You On.

White Trash Recipes is hands down the epitome of the album. Another theme song for my blue-collar brethren. Call it “White Trash,” call it youth, call it what you want; the song touches on anyone who grew up latchkey or blue-collar, or someone like myself, raised in a family of all boys in rural VA. Mom would make us some god-awful tuna casserole that we all ate at the dinner table… together….as a family.

White Trash Recipes resonates in a clear, unapologetic way reminiscing on growing up poor, making the best of it, and loving every second. I reckon that recipe got passed down to me. It’s always been come on in and make yourself at home; there’s a yard full of barking dogs, a bunch of barefoot kids playing baseball in the yard, and freezer full of pizza rolls waiting for them. If that’s what it means to be “white trash”…. then im damn proud to wear the shoe.

Final Thoughts

Joshua Sinclar delivers a damn fine beer drinkin and BBQ’n soundtrack with White Trash Recipes.

To be honest, I had never heard of Joshua Sinclair before this album. With White Trash Recipes, Sinclair has set out on a mission to make it clear that he knows how to write a country song. The production behind this album is excellent and well put together, dynamically arranged, and formulated for windows-down, radio-blaring. White Trash Recipes is a hidden gem destined to live on repeat all summer long.
