Addison Johnson emerges as a rising star in storytelling, hailing from Greensboro, NC. Despite his acclaim within certain circles, Johnson’s name was unfamiliar to me until the release of his sophomore album, Dangerous Men. With 11 tracks spanning 45 minutes, this album pays homage to traditional outlaw country, solidifying Johnson’s place amidst accolades and heralding a Neo-Traditional resurgence.
Johnson has a knack for blending traditional sounds with modern flair. His voice is a very clean, but unique fusion of Hank 3‘s grit, yet the polished finesse of a contemporary chart-topper, maybe a Cody Johnson? Dangerous Men exudes a vintage country vibe with a modern twist, evident from the get-go with the opening track Waitin’ on the World to End. Throughout the album, the instrumentation evokes the ambiance of a beloved honky-tonk dive. The entire record is characterized by galloping bass, drums, and the twang of a telecaster. More so, it’s all accented by the haunting wail of a purist’s favorite, the pedal steel.
Songs, Lyrics and Music
Lyrically the album quickly dives into quintessential outlaw country themes – addiction, drinking, death, and self-deprecation – yet Johnson distinguishes himself through his masterful storytelling. Each track vividly portrays his personal trials and tribulations, notably in Damaged Goods. The title track, Dangerous Men, channels the spirit of legends like Bocephus, offering poignant commentary on the state of the world and the men it creates.
Some standout tracks include my personal favorite, Country Inn, detailing all the hellish things that occur in a shitty roadside motel. I Did Nothing Wrong spins a nightmarish tale of being in the wrong place at the wrong time.
